About

My name is Mark Schofield. I was born in the UK and now live and work in France.

Art is my passion, not my job. While this limits the amount of time I can spend on it, it also means I have the freedom to do what I want and take as much time as I need.

My creative work includes drawing, painting and sculpture. I find these activities to be complementary, with insights from one feeding into the others.

In my drawing and painting, my main interest is in finding effective solutions for modelling three dimensional space on a two dimensional surface. I use one-point, isometric and curvilinear perspective as well as more complex methods to render space in different ways. I am also interested in how to represent time. Some of my work focuses on the passing of time through studies of physical effects such as ageing and weathering. Other works try to capture movement, or a specific instant of time.

In my sculpture, I frequently use linear materials such as wire to describe form and define volume. These works are like drawings in three dimensions. I also enjoy the challenge of creating sculptures from assemblies of found objects such as pieces of wood and metal, with only a minimal amount of transformation.

My artistic approach has remained consistent over time: a focus on clarity and simplicity using an economy of means.
